It’s sometimes difficult to find a life-long Bloomington resident who doesn’t have memories of seeing one of the doctors at “Geiger, Sibbitt, White and Pugh.” Over the years, our practice name has changed and so have the doctors, but our commitment to the patient remains as strong as ever.
ENT Associates of Southern Indiana was originally founded by Dr. Dillon Geiger in the 1930’s. Dr Geiger was born and raised in Bloomington, and after finishing his training returned to town and opened the practice. Interestingly, Dr. Geiger trained in an era in which the specialties of ophthalmology and otolaryngology where combined, and he was trained and board certified in both areas. During World War II Dr. Geiger closed the practice and joined the army. While in the army, Dr. Geiger meet Colonel Pugh (Dr. Pugh’s father), and thus established the relationship for Dr. Pugh to eventually join the practice.
After the war ended, Dr. Geiger returned to Bloomington and reestablished the practice. He was joined by Dr. Joseph Sibbitt in the late 1950’s. The practice next expanded with the addition of Dr. Phil White in 1966. Dr. White was born and raised in Noble County in northern Indiana. It is interesting that during Dr. White’s training, he actually lived in what is now known as Wishard Hospital as a true “resident” physician. In 1967 the Indiana Hoosier football team made its one and only trip to the Rose Bowl. As the new physician in the practice Dr. White was told that he would have to stay in Bloomington to watch the practice, but was promised that the next time Indiana went to the Rose Bowl he would get to go…unfortunately, he is still waiting to go to Pasadena.
Dr. Pugh joined the group in 1971, completing the original core group of four surgeons. Dr. Sarpa joined the practice in 1990, followed by Dr. McBride in 1998 and Dr. Johnson in 2003. For those of you counting, that is only seven surgeons in the over 70 year history of the group, a truly amazing fact.
All of our surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. Our surgeons primarily utilize the Bloomington Hospital and Monroe Hospital for inpatient services and surgeries and the Southern Indiana Surgery Center for outpatient procedures. We also have privileges at the Bloomington Hospital of Orange County and Monroe Hospital.
